Never trained
Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu before?

Most people who walk in here have never trained anything — not fit, not flexible, no idea what they are doing. That is the normal way to start.

We will take you through the movements from the beginning, at your own pace. Everyone training alongside you began the same way.

The fitness arrives on its own. So does the self-defence. What keeps people coming back is everything underneath that — the discipline it asks for, the people you train with, and what it does for your mind.

More than a gym — a small, family-oriented community. You will belong before you learn anything.

Classes

Traditional Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu. Technique before strength, position before submission, and a room that runs on discipline, respect, resilience and community. Every class takes beginners.

  • BJJ Gi

The grips slow everything down and put the advantage on patience and precision rather than speed. It is where rank is earned and where most people’s technical game is built.

  • BJJ No Gi

Rash guard and shorts, nothing to hold. The pace lifts, the grips move to the body, and scrambles decide far more than they do in the Gi.

  • Open Mat

No instruction. Turn up, roll with whoever is there, and work on what you want. Open to all members.

  • Kids BJJ

Grappling, not striking. No punching and no kicking. Split by age so a seven-year-old is not training against a twelve-year-old.

Technique and timing beat strength and speed, which is why a sixty-year-old can train with a twenty-year-old and why people stay in this long after they have given up everything else.

Kids Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu class at Arena Sunshine Coast in Warana

Kids Jiu-Jitsu

Jiu-jitsu for four to thirteen-year-olds, split by age.

What your child learns is how to stay calm when someone bigger has hold of them — which is exactly the situation a bullied kid finds themselves in.

Our kids coaches work with children outside the gym as well as on the mat, and they know how to hold the attention of a room full of them without raising their voices.

Sessions are built on confidence, discipline, respect and self-defence. Technique is how those get taught, not the point of it. Children who know they can handle themselves generally have far less to prove. Grappling, not striking — no punching and no kicking.

A great gym for beginners through to advanced practitioners. For both hobbyists and competition athletes. Bomba has always created a great gym culture and is an excellent coach.

Amazing gym with a great culture. Gus is a awesome coach with a style and fundamentals that works for beginners and higher belts. Iv been going for years in both gi and no gi and it has been the best decision on my fitness journey. Highly recommended people come down and give it a go.

Gus and the team are some of the best people I’ve had the honor of training with and learning alongside. Gus welcomes suggestions for techniques or training no matter what your skill level is and happily helps to improve you as much as you can.

Awesome BJJ classes for kids and adults. My son has joined with both and loves the supportive, technical instruction. Gus is professional and extremely knowledgeable and makes the sessions fun too. Highly recommend this studio.

Questions

Do I need to be fit first?

No. Trying to get fit before you start is the most common reason people never start. The classes will do that part.

What do I wear to the first class?

Shorts without pockets or zips, and a t-shirt or rash guard. You do not need a gi until you decide to stay.

Will I get hurt?

Jiu-jitsu has no striking. You train with a partner, not against one, and everything stops the moment either of you taps. Beginners are paired with experienced training partners for exactly this reason.

I am in my forties. Am I too old?

Members here range from four to sixty. Jiu-jitsu rewards technique and timing over strength and speed, which is why people keep training in it long after they have stopped doing everything else.

Do I have to compete?

No. Most members never compete. Those who want to are supported. Everyone else just trains.

How young can they start?

Four. The 4–8 class is built around games and coordination as much as technique.

Is it safe?

There is no striking and no punching. Classes are age-split and supervised throughout, and children are taught to control a position rather than cause damage.

Will it make my child aggressive?

The opposite, in practice. Children who know they can handle themselves have far less to prove. Respect and self-control are non-negotiable on the mat.

Can I watch?

Yes. Parents are welcome to stay and watch any class.
